Jean Acevedo

President & CEO

LHRM, CPC, CHC, CENTC, AAPC Fellow

Jean Acevedo has over 30 years of health care experience and founded Acevedo Consulting in 2000. Certified in Health Care Compliance, and a Certified Professional Coder, Her CENTC designation was bestowed on her as she served on the AAPC Steering Committee that wrote the ENT coding examination.  She has a particular expertise in chart audits, compliance & education relative to physician and other professional’s documentation and coding.  Jean has been an expert witness in civil and criminal litigation and an investigative consultant for both defendants and the DOJ and FBI in Federal fraud cases.

Recognizing physician reimbursement is moving from a pure “fee for service” model to one reimbursing for quality and value, her firm helps physician organizations understand the rules and nuances of diagnosis coding and its impact on Medicare Risk Adjustment (MRA) coding.

 

Other specialty areas of particular expertise include hospice and palliative care, and rheumatology.  In 2014, she was awarded a Presidential Citation by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) at the AAHPM/HPNA 2014 Annual Assembly in appreciation of her contributions to the field of hospice and palliative medicine in helping them understand the complexities of coding, reimbursement and regulatory compliance.  She co-authored a series of “Top 10” articles published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine on challenges in palliative care, and is the co-creator of “Billing for Palliative Care Services,” an online course of California State University.

Well known for her knowledge of Rheumatology documentation, coding and reimbursement, she works with rheumatology practices both large and small conducting chart audits and helping to educate the physicians, NPPs and staff. She has been a speaker at many of the rheumatology physicians’ meetings including STAR, FSR,  MRS, and the National Organization of Rheumatology Management (NORM). She presented sessions on the 2021 E/M Documentation and Coding changes at the American College of Rheumatology’s annual ACR Convergence conference in 2020 and 2021 and will present at the 2026 ACR Convergence conference.

 

Jean was an instructor at Florida Atlantic University where she taught the regulatory compliance modules of FAU’s Certificate in Medical Business Management program for 15 years, and a member of several Coding Institute Editorial Advisory Boards. Jean has been a Participant in CMS’ Medicare Provider Feedback Group, CMS Division of Provider Information Planning and Development since 2007 and is a member of the Jurisdiction 9 MAC’s Provider Outreach and Education Advisory Group.  She has been an annual guest lecturer on documentation and reimbursement at FAU’s DNP program since 2015. The firm’s clients know her advise and recommendations will be based on experience and authoritative sources.
